~ Empathic Realism is the act of presence, listening to truly see ~ Kate Van Doren

Kate Van Doren is best known for creating representational imagery that conveys the strength and vulnerability inherent to the human condition. Grounded in an approach she has shaped and defines as Empathic Realism, her work emphasizes emotional connection, presence, and understanding between artist, subject, and viewer. Kate’s practice examines key themes of mental health and healing. Kate’s current series is rooted in her Healing Words Project, bringing into relationship imagery and language as catalysts for connection, human rights, and transformative empowerment. Each artwork is created through consent-based collaboration, centering women and gender expansive voices from around the world.  Her inspirations share their stories in their own words and develop personal mantras that become integral to the work, with imagery shaped collaboratively to transform lived experience into powerful art grounded in dignity, connection, and inspiration.
